A Q&A with… Anthony Lomas

Hoxton’s Head of Underwriting – Anthony Lomas – started out in insurance as a teenager. Here he tells us about what he does at Hoxton, why he loves the firm’s proposition, his dogs, and his passion for dance.

1. When did you start out in insurance? And what was the appeal?

When I was sixteen I did my work experience in an insurance company. The environment was really great and the work seemed like a good mix in terms of being interesting and having a good work-life balance. Later, when the time came to look for a career, it just felt like a natural progression.

2. If not in insurance, what other career might you have chosen and why?

A ballet dancer. I have a real passion for dance and am classically trained in ballet. I’d have loved to do it professionally, but when you’re starting out you still need to pay the bills, so you almost need to have two careers until one of them takes off. I am lucky and have worked hard to have built a career in insurance, but I’m still very passionate about dance.

3. Tell us about your role at Hoxton…

Well, as a start-up my role involves a little bit of everything. First, I help to manage the IT and infrastructure, and develop the Hoxton tech system so it’s continually improving and working at its best. The main aspect of my role is underwriting specific risks, and making sure we’re underwriting the right type of risks, etc. I also review policy wordings, and generally get involved with most aspects of the business.

4. Why did you choose to work at Hoxton?

I really like what Hoxton stands for. We’re reshaping something that has always been rigid and fixed. By which I mean personal lines insurance. I love that we’re moving it into the modern world. In previous roles, I’ve worked in teams that weren’t even able to email documents. I’m proud of our work to offer digital transactions and our ethos of being completely open about what we do/don’t do and what we can/can’t offer. What’s not to like?

5. Talk us through a typical day at work…

There is no typical day, really. The only set thing is a call with our tech team first thing. After that, anything can happen!

6. Can you describe Hoxton in three words?

Innovative. Personable. Transparent.

7. What’s your go-to productivity trick?

When you feel like you’re not working at your best, like you’re being less productive than you could – the best thing to do is to take a break. My go-to break is to do some training. It sounds counterproductive but shifting your focus for a while means you come back refreshed and ready to get back at it.

8. How do you relax away from work?

I train a lot – particularly Cross Fit.

9. What three things would you take with you to a desert island?

I’m a pretty practical person so I’d want to be prepared. I’d take:

Sunscreen;

A water bottle; and

A packet of seeds for food crops.

10. Do you have any pets? (And can we see a picture?)

Yes! I have two dogs: Alfred and Albert. They’re Jack Russells, and they’re great company when I work from home.
